The beginning of this week The Hubs and I were FINALLY able to go on our 4 year anniversary trip. Our anniversary is the first week in August, but Bubba got sick with what I kept calling "Hoof and Mouth." Wrong. Hand, Foot, and Mouth. But now we know why we were postponed....the weather and the views.
We dropped off Bubba along the way to our parent's house so he could have fun with Marmee and Pop, with a little Nana mixed in (and I'm also assuming most of the neighborhood/friends/co-workers) :) The dude loves attention. I think he had a great time.
Along the way up the mountains, we stopped outside of Clemson to check out Stumphouse Tunnel. Joe read the whole marker, but the jist is that supposedly back in the 1800s some people wanted to build a railroad from Florida to New York, and instead of going around them mountains, they wanted to go through them. With pick axes. Right. They made it about 200 yards I think in 2 years, so they decided it wasn't worth it anymore. I agree. Joe wanted to go back into the tunnel...right after asking me if I thought bears could live in there. Yeah Joe. Now I want to go. The Clemson link is that they used to store their Blue Cheese because the tunnel stays a steady mid 50's temperature. Interesting little pit stop.

not scary at all right?
Next stop, Snowbird Lodge! Our anniversary thing is to find cool B&B's and explore the towns around them. The cool thing about Snowbird is that its an inn, so all meals are served there, and it's secluded, so you stay pretty much on the grounds the whole time. They had hiking, kayaking, biking, a huge den/library area...and NO TVs!!!

I could live here....

The view from the porch. A-mazing.

The side of the lodge...can't get a front shot...you'd fall off the mountain!
We took a "moderate to strenuous" hike on Tuesday, with a guide we should add, thinking we'd be back right after lunch. Well...7 hours later....we were still not back. It was definitely an all day affair, but the view from the top was well worth the work. It seemed like we were on the highest peak, and there was a rock just plopped on top for us to have lunch on. Crazy beautiful.

Definitely glad we had a guide.
Driving up into the lodge we saw this... and said (before we saw anything) "we're not going to want to leave."

ReplyDeleteps - Will and I tried to walk all the way to the back of Stumphouse tunnel one year in college and I completely chickened out! waaaaay too dark inside for me.
